Lady Orford Is At Home At Manurewa
Garden Party in Lovely Surroundings GLORIOUS SUMMER SUNSHINE The Earl and Countess of Orford were “At Home” in their charming garden at Manurewa House on Saturday afternoon. The glorious summer day was absolutely ideal for a garden party, and the function proved altogether del ightf ul. The native bush, which makes such a lovely setting for the house, looked particularly cool and inviting, and many of the guests availed themselves of the opportunity to wander along the winding paths in the shade. On the lawns gay garden umbrellas, marquees and shady swing seats were arranged where guests could admire the brightly attractive flower beds and glorious hydrangea blooms. The guests were received on arrival by the Earl and Countess of Orford in the shade of a marquee on the lawn. Tennis was enjoyed by some of the younger guests and exhibitions of dancing by a number of Madame Baird’s pupils on the grassy slopes in front of the house were very much appreciated. The dances included delightful solos by Miss Molly Woolcott, Miss Ella Brampton, and Miss J. Welsh. Miss Enid Kelly and Miss Betty Young gave a duo, and members of the Artistic Physical Development Society, of which the Countess is president, contributed a graceful quartet. Other dancers were Miss Betty Young, Misses Enid and Jqan Kelly, Miss Zoe Miller, Misses M. and E. Needham, Misses Steven (3), Miss S. Greenwood and Miss O’Halloran. Incidental music during the afternoon was supplied by the Civic Orchestra. The Countess of Orford was wearing a smart cream tailleur with beige bangkok hat trimmed at one side with a cluster of ospreys. Little Lady Anne Walpole, her daughter, was in a pink and white organdi frock with a shady straw hat. AMONG THOSE PRESENT Lady Sinclair-Lockhart was wearing black chiffon and lace over palest beige, with a black hat with beige osprey mounts. Lady Mitchelson’s ensemble was of black duchesse satin with small black hat. Mrs. Averill was in a ravenswing blue satin gown with small hat of matching shade. Mrs. H. O. Nolan had on a pretty black and rose flowered georgette gown, and a black bangkok hat. Mrs. Lonsdale Pritt wore a black satin ensemble with ostrich feather boa, and a black hat. Mrs. W. H. Parlces wore a gown of black and parchment coloured georgette, panelled with lace, and a shady black crinoline hat, rose trimmed. Miss Mowbray’s black satin coat was worn over a black and white gown, and her black hat was osprey trimmed. Mrs. R. E. Jeffreys was in honeycoloured georgette and lace, with a beige flower-trimmed hat. Mrs. Anthony Carr’s smart black ensemble was worn with an ermine stole, and a black hat trimmed with ospreys. Mrs. Harold Bull had on a black lace frock and shady liseret straw hat. Mrs. R. E. Isaacs wore a corn-coloured georgette and laca gown and a widebrimmed beige hat. Mrs. Clutha Mackenzie was wearing a black flowered chiffon frock and a shady black bangkok hat. Mrs. Bruce Mackenzie wore figured crepe de chine in blue and lime tonings, with a green liseret straw hat. Mrs. G. Bloomfield had on a graceful, uneven-length frock of black chiffon and a wide-brimmed black hat. Mrs. E. R. N, Russell was in a pretty larkspur blue and ivory flowered chiffon frock with shady blue hat to match. Mrs. C. F. Buddie had on a black chiffon frock and a large black hat. Mrs. Somerset Thomas wore a gown of ivory georgette and lace and a widebrimmed black hat. Mrs. A. O’Neill’s gown of black chiffon was worn with a large black ballibuntal hat. Mrs. Hugh Fenton wore a smart ivory suit of embroidered liberty silk and a wide-brimmed blue hat. Mrs. Isaacs wore a pretty blue and rose-spotted black ninon gown and a large black crinoline hat. Dr. Margaret Knight’s floral chiffon frock was of deep burgundy red, worn with a large black hat. Mrs. Preston-Chambers was in plantation brown embroidered crepe de chine and a brown hat to tone. Mrs. Somerest Clive wore a black crepe de chine gown patterned in beige, and a beige and black hat. Mrs. Goldie was wearing a black silk ensemble and a close-fitting black hat. Mrs. d’Este chose a black and white crepe de chine gown, and a black ballibuntal hat. Madame Baird had on an ivory and black ninon frock patterned in rose and blue, and a shady black crinoline hat. Mrs. Woolcott was wearing an amethyst flowered georgette frock with grey and amethyst hat. Mrs. Satchwell had on a blue and grey frock, with lace scarf and blue flowertrimmed hat. Mrs. Scott Shaw wore a leaf green and beige flowered frock and hat to tone. Mrs. Kaihan had on a brown satin lace gown with matching brown hat. Mrs. Hamilton had on a black flowered georgette frock and large black hat. Miss Jean Lawford was wearing a beige georgette and lace frock, fox fur and a beige hat. Miss Cherry Anderson had on a peacock gown of oyster figured crepe de chine, with shady hat to tone. Miss Dina Isaacs was in a satin beaute gown of soft beech brown, with widebrimmed hat to tone. Miss Renee Satchwell wore a pretty flowered ninon frock with a small black crinoline hat. Miss Ailsa Russell was in a corded satin frock of deep mushroom brown, with shady hat to tone. Miss Cicely Russell was in a prettv flowered chiffon frock, and widebrimmed black hat. Miss Waller wore a smart flowered georgette frock of yellow and dull flame tonings, with a black bangkok hat. Miss Jocelyn Bloomfield was wearing a cyclamen crepe de chine frock and a smart black and white hat. Miss Jean Leckie, Wellington, had on a smart black flowered chiffon frock ar.d a large black hat. Miss Audrey Horton was wearing white Chiffon figured in black and orange, with wide-brimmed beige bangkok hat? 0 , M * ss wore an ivory gown and a shady white hat. Sandford had an embroidered hS: Ck satin suit and a black bangkok Miss Thomas had on a buttercup velgeorgette frock and a shady crinoMiss Clive had on a chocolate brown satin beaute frock and a yellow hat. Miss Goldie’s pretty georgette frock was of forget-me-not blue with a parchment coloured hat. Miss Irene Isaacs was in cherry red liberty silk with cherry hat to tone. Miss A.. O’Neill had on a pale begonia frock and a large white hat. Miss Egerton was in black and red patterned crepe de chine with a black hat. Miss Jocelyn Wilkie was in a beige and black figured georgette frock and a beige hat. Miss O’Neill chose a forest brown satin .beaute gown and hat of matching shade.
