REUNION PROPOSED

COLONISTS’ JUBILEE To celebrate the arival of colonists 50 years ago on the ship British Empire, it is proposed to hold a reunion next month. Mr. John Broady, of Bellevue Avenue, Northcote, is making arrangements for the event. Many of the vessel’s 350 passengers still reside in Auckland. Mr. G. R. Hutcinson, a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, came on the vessel. Two passengers well known in Auckland were the late Mr. S. J. Ambury and Mr. L. J. Ambury. When the ship arrived on February 4, 1880, 18 cases of scarlet fever had been reported on baord and eight wersons were dead. The survivors improved in health in quarantine at Motuihi Island and the disease did not spread. The British Empire’s passage occupicji 89 days. It took 10 days to sail from the Three Kings to Auckland.
