SANDERS CUP CONTEST

FIRST RACE TOMCfoROW AFTERNOON CONTENTIOUS RULE DELETED The first race of the Sanders Cup contest will begin at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow. Racing will be suspended on Wednesday, Anniversary Day, and resumed, on Thursday, when two races will bn contested, one beginning at 10 a.m. and the other at 3 p.m. It necessary further races will be held later in th« week. These arrangements were agreed upon at a meeting of the Dominion Yachting Conference held in the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron rooms this morning. Mr. C. H. T. Palmer (Auckland) was unanimously elected chairman, and Mr. C. Holmes v Wellington), vicechairman. All courses will be nine miles long, being windward and leeward and triangular, alternatively. A race not finishing in three hours will be declared no race. The question of the use of leading jibs by some contestants us jibs on a windward and leeward course was raised by Mr. T. H. Anderson (Otago), who asked for a ruling. He said the rules were being defeated, the leadingjib being cut smaller in some cases for windward work. Mr. A. J. -Collins (Auckland) said the rules were quite clear. The leading jib should not be used as a jib. After technical discussion the meeting forwarded a memorandum to the measurers that leaders be required to conform to plan. END OF RULE 3 The contentious Rule 3, a supplementary regulation to the Yacht Racing Association’s rules, under which the contest is sailed, was discussed after being brought up by Mr. J. T. Paul (Otago), who a*ked its interpretation. Mr. Palmer said the rule was designed to safeguard racing craft from interference by other competitors in a race or by outside influence such as collision. Mr. Paul felt that the rule overrode the Y.R.A. rules, and was dangerous. In any case, the rulehad been found almost impossible of definition. On his motion, Mr. Anderson seconding, it was decided to delete the rule, the voting being six to two, Auckland delegates alone dissenting. Officers were elected as follow: Chairman. Mr. C. H. T. Palmer (Auckland); vice-chairman, Mr. C. Holmes (Wellington); honorary secretary, Mr. A. J. Collings (Auckland); judges, Messrs. W. Duncan (Wellington), C. Woodward (Canterbury). T. H. Anderson (Otago); starter, Air. W. A. Wilkinson (Auckland); timekeepers. Messrs. G. Mobberley (Auckland) and W. H. WagstafC (Wellington); measurers, Alessrs. C. Trevethick (Auckland) and E. R. Bailey (Wellington). RECEPTION TO VIBITORS Before the conference began, the visitors were given a civic reception by the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon. He expressed pleasure at their presence, and wished all a happy stay in Auckland, and that suitable weather would prevail during the contest. On behalf of the Auckland Harbour Board, the chairman, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, briefly welcomed the competing crews. Mr. C. H. T. Falmer. chairman of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association, welcomed the visitors for Auckland yachtsmen. Mr. E. B. Webster, chairman of the Anniversary Regatta Committee, invited the visitors to inspect the racing on Wednesday from the flagship. Messrs. J. Paul (Otago). C. Holmes (Wellington) and J. Watson (Canterbury) briefly responded.
