FEWER BIRTHS

ENGLAND’S POPULATION GOING BACK INFLUENCE OF EPIDEMIC LONDON, Thursday. The birth-rate in England and Wales in 1929 was 16.3 per 1,000, the lowest on record. The death-rate was 13.4 per 1,000, an increase of 1.7 per cent, over 1925, owing to the influenza epidemic in the spring. The birth rate is now below the figure which statisticians estimate to be necessary to maintain the population at its present strength. It is probably the lowest in the world.
