PATUMAHOE RESIDENT AND FAMILY HONOURED SUCCESSFUL DANCE EVENING A farewell social was given to Mr. and Mrs. E. St. C. Syme and family in the Patumahoe War Memorial Hall on _ Wednesday evening, rn view of their approaching departure for Awarua, North Auckland. There was a large attendance of settlers. Mr. J. Henry, Mauku Riding representative on the Franklin County Council, referred to the keen interest the family had taken in local affairs during their 10 years of residence. Mr. W. E. Johns, president of the Mauku Athletic Club, spoke of the invaluable assistance the family had given the club. Or behalf of the assembly Mr. Henry presented Mr. Syme with a well-filled wallet. • Musical items were contributed by Mrs. Rattray, of Auckland, and Miss E. Parris. Dance music was played by Mrs. G. Torkar and Mr. Eric Syme. Messrs. M. Irwin and G. McAlpine were masters of ceremonies. BANANA DELICACIES Bananas when cooked form a nourishing and appetising food, and home cooks are always on the look-out for new suggestions for preparing this popular fruit. Here are two unusual recipes: South Sea Delight.—Peel 6 bananas, cut them in halves lengthwise and arrange in a shallow buttered dish. Mix together in a basin the juice of 1 large orange and 2 tablespoons brown sugar and pour over the bananas. Combine 2 tablespoons of cake or biscuit-crumbs with an equal quantity of desiccated coconut and heap on top of each banana. Bake in a good oven until bananas are tender and the coconut brown. Banana Shortcake. —Quarter-pound butter, ilb sugar, 2 eggs, 6oz flour, 4 teaspoons salt, 1 gill milk, 2 teaspoons baking-powder, grated rind of a lemon, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence Cream butter and 6Ugar and add eggyolks, beating well. Sieve flour, salt and baking-powder, and add with milk, grated rind and essence. Add eggwhites (beaten stiffly), folding in carefully, divide and bake in two tins for J hour in a moderate oven. Filling: Peel 3 or 4 bananas and slice into a basin. Beat with a silver fork, add sugar to taste and a grate of nutmeg and put this between the two cakes. Whip a cup of cream with a little sugar and spread on top of cake. Just before serving decorate wiMi a few slices of banana and spidflKle’j w/<h nuts. . ’ 1
