Woman Meets Death When Visiting Mine
TOOK REFRESHMENTS IN FRUITLESS RESCUE EFFORTS Tress Association OAMARU, Today. The body of Mrs. Matheson, wife of Dr. D. G. Matheson, who was killed in a fall in a coalmine on her husband’s property at Kurow yesterday afternoon, was recovered at six o’clock this morning. Mrs. Matheson took refreshments to the miners, then walked about a chain into the shaft just before the fall occurred. A miner rushed to the Waitaki hydro-electric works for help and 100 men were secured to assist in the rescue work. They h/id progressed only a short distance when another fall occurred. Rescue work was continued, but the men were hampered by further falls. Entrance was made to the mine through the airshaft to the interior side of the fall, but there was no sign of Mrs. Matheson. Hopes were entertained right, up to the discovery of her body for her recovery alive.
