Claims of Parnell and Ponsonby
Second Round of A.C.A. Cricket Starts
IT might have been expected that Ponsonby's attempt to lower the colours of the leading team, Parnell, would be given pride of place at Eden Park tomorrow, but No. 1 wicket has been allotted to Eden and University. From a public point of view, it should have gone to the more important match, especially in view of the fact that the coach was not playing in the first game, and that considerable interest attaches to the form of Cleverley, whose rapid rise to near-representative honours from a lower grade is a prime topic of conversation.
Neither Eden nor Varsity has the samo reputation for playing bright and enterprising cricket, and if the support of the public is to be fostered, chief position should go to the best match, as is done in other sports. The first match between Parnell and Ponsonby in October was one of the most exciting that has been played this season, a remarkable last wicket partnership between Singleton and Goodsir saving the game for Parnell. Both sides have batsmen who can get runs quickly, and tomorrow should also witness a keen contest between the two strongest bowling combinations in the competition. Provided the Varsity batting does not crumple up (and it does not look as if Eden lias the bowlers to bring that about), the game on No. 1 area should be more of a protracted test of batting. Both sides put up good scores in the first round, and the match was marked by a lively tussle at the finish. Y.M.C.A. and United Suburbs should be fairly evenly matched on No. 3 wicket, and Grafton and Shore promise to provide a good game at Devonport. The teams’ list is as follows: Senior A Grade Eden.—V.
