BAD FOR AUCKLAND

CHILLY CONDITIONS AT < SWIMMING WILL STOKES BEAT BRIDSON? Special to THE SUN GREYMOUTH, Today. New Zealand’s best swimmers are now assembled and in training for the national championships for 27 events, beginning this evening in the Greymouth Municipal Baths. Most interest is being centred in the form of the massive Aucklander, Gordon Bridson, who has been training carefully for the extraordinarily heavy task set him for competing in all the men’s championships from 100yds to cne mile. Bridson has just added to the belief that he will be the new sprint champion by breaking Norman Dowsett’s 100yds fresh-water record in a practice, when he made a time of 58 4-ssec. The water up to today has been chilly, and this must have an effect on the Auckland swimmers. Canterbury officials are already predicting the defeat of Bridson by the East Christchurch swimmer, A. T, F. Stokes. The Auckland intermediate boy swimmer,' R. Thomas, is attracting a good deal of attention from judges. He has easily the best swimming style of any competitor here. The Wellington girl. Miss Kathleen Miller, is being pointed to as the winner of the women’s 100yds, 200yds and 440yds titles. The Auckland girls, Miss Peggy Robertson and Marie Farquhar, were expected to be prominent in the 100, but they may now be affected by the unaccustomed cold of the water.
