PERABO’S NON-APPEAR-ANCE STADIUM MANAGER’S STATEMENT The lion.-appearance of Charlie Perabo, the Australian cinder track rider, at Blandford Park on Wednesday evening, caused concern to the management as well as inconvenience, and it has been decided to make public the full facts of the case, so that patrons will be convinced that it was through no fault of the authorities that Perabo did not ride. The manager of the stadium, Mr. G. Hunt, received a letter from Perabo addressed from Christchurch, where the Australian was riding, asking terms to ride in Auckland for the rest of the season. In his letter Perabo stated that his contract with the stadium there was just expiring, and that as he was weary of Christchurch he did not wish to rerrew it. The authorities replied and an agreement was drawn up between them and the document being signed by the Australian and by directors of the stadium. The agreement' was that Perabo should appear at six meetings, commencing on or about January 20, and would receive £ls a meeting, or total appearance money not exceeding £9O. In addition he was to receive all prize money he won and expenses to Auckland. Perabo arrived in Auckland on Friday and was interviewed by Mr. Hunt at 2.45 p.m. on Tuesday, when Perabo said that he would be appearing on the following evening. On Wednesday evening at 7.55 p.m., five minutes before the programme was to commence, the Australian was not in the pit nor on the ground, and inquiries by phone elicited the information that he had left for Wellington but a short time previously. The directors are endeavouring to obtain an explanation of Perabo’s sudden departure.
