bowling tournament ONE AUCKLANDER OUT Press Association DUNEDIN, Wednesday. fme weather favoured the Dominion TSoNVling Association today when the annual tournament was continued. A «tart was made with post-section play in the rinks competition for which IN rinks had qualified. Three games of -1 heads each with a time limit of Three hours were played, with the re - sult that the number of competitors was reduced to 10. Several games in the pairs competition and two in the singles were also completed. The result of today’s play in the rinks is that Seddon (St. Clair), Stevens (Wailiopai). Callender (Timarub Carswell (Taieri), Falconer (Otago). Bentley (Dunedin), Ellis (Kaikorai), Grant (Phoenix) and Bremner (West End, Auckland), have been eliminated. This leaves Stuart (St. Kilda), Ardell (Hataitai), Thomson (Southland), with two lives; Adess (St. Kilda ». Jenkin (Carlton), Watson (United). Claridge (Caledonian), Foster (Caversham) and Veitch (West Harbour) with one life. first round played In the first round of the rinks Stevens started well against Foster, but the latter eventually won comfortably by 23 points to 14. Bentley and Jenkin had a good game. With five heads to play Bentley led by 18 to 12, l.ut Jenkin equalised tlie scores by getting a 5 and a single. Bentley was three up with one head to go and won by a single point. Thomson had a fairly comfortable ■win against Carswell, running out the \ inner by 19 points to 12. Veitch and Grant had a keen contest, which ended in favour of Veitch by one point. Watson had an easy win against Falconer, who was beaten by 26 points to 4 at the end of 19 heads. Scoring in the game between Stuart rnd Seddon took some remarkable turns and the contest ended in favour Stuart by one point. Ellis and Calender had a keen fight, an extra head having to be played to decide the issue. With only one head to go Ellis was A up, but Callender got the number required to make a tie. The extra head gave a single to Ellis. Claridge quickly ran into a strong |cad against Bremner and won by 26 |o 12. Scores in the game between Ardell and Adess were 5 all at the end pi 7 heads, but after that the former took command, and was never headed. In the second round Ellis put up a good fight against Thomson in the early ptages, but in the second half Thomson had matters pretty well all his own way and won by 34 points to 13. Veitch had a comfortable win against Bentley, but it was only in the concluding plages that he assumed the lead. Scores were 9 all at the end of the 14th head. Ardell and Claridge had a great fight for two-*hirds of their game, but in the final stages the former proved too good, eventually winning by 25 points to 19. At one stage of the game between Foster and Seddon it appeared as if Foster would have an easy win, but Seddon made a good recovery and lost by only one point. In the game between Adess and Stevens, Adess scored 16 —0 in the first six heads, and when 10 ends had been decided he led by 21 points to 1. Stevens scored on the next six heads, bringing his aggregate to 9, with five heads to go. The St. Kilda rink finished 8 up. Grant beat Callender in a game in which the scoring was even all through. Carswell put up a good fight against Bremner until the final stages, but was beaten by four points. Watson held his own against Stuart for 16 heads, but after that he was badly beaten. Jenkin beat Falconer in a game the issue of which was in doubt until the finish. HOW AUCKLANDERS FARED In the third round Adess beat Bremner by 22 points to 21, the issue being decided on the last head after Adess had burnt the head. For most of the game between Jenkin and Grant the former had a fairly comfortable lead, but the latter pulled up toward the finish and the game was decided with Jenkin’s last bowl, a very close draw when Grant was lying 3. The first half of the game between Ardell and Foster was very much in favour of Foster, but victory went to Ardell. Bentley scored in the first two heads aaginst Watson, but was beaten by 25 points to 11 on the 20th head. Thomson ran into a good lead against Veitch in the early stages of their Kamo and won easily by 32 points to 21. Willis got a 4 and a 2 on the last two heads against Claridge, but was still six down at the finish. Several games to find green winners in the pairs competition wore played today. In a few cases post-section play on the ‘sudden death” principle was '•ompleted. The position in regard to the pairs is still' very indefinite owing to several being still in the rinks. The singles competition has been reduced to four players. Vance (Sumner), two lives, Foster (Caversham), Sanders (Kaituna). and Lambeth (Balmacewan). one life.
