CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

WHO IS FASTEST ON THE CINDER TRACK? WESTERN SPRINGS MEETING Who is Auckland’s champion cindershifter? A series of contests to discover the fastest rider on the cinder track will be begun at Western Springs stadium on Saturday evening next, when a full programme of races will be presented by Auckland Speedways, Limited. All Mattson, the popular IS-year-old rider, will be seen in action against the other seconds handicap men, Ben Bray, of Whangarei, and Bill Herbert, the grass-track champion. It ia among these three that popular fancy is sure to range, but the contests for the championship will be open to all Auckland racers, and Jack Garroson, Sell Casey and Frank Day are sure to be aspirants for the honour. Who knows but that the champion of the season will come from the ranks of the “improvers” of Saturday night. Attempts on the one-lap record of 21sec made by Wally •Ivilmister will be made at this meeting. Only fourfifths of a second less, and Lionel van Praag would have equalled the record last Saturday. This might well have been accomplished had not the Australian been tired after the night’s racing, and the odds are that this week will see the Wellington speeds.ers record come tumbling down.
