ATLANTIC FLEET

CHANGED CONTROL OF THIRD SQUADRON POST FOR AUSTRALIAN LONDON, Sunday. Rear-Admiral G. F. Hyde, formerly of the Australian Navy, has been appointed to the command of the Third Battle Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet.

He is to succeed Rear-Admiral H. K. Kitson. Rear-Admiral G. F. Hyde retired from the command of the Australian Navy in May of last year, when he was succeeded by Rear-Admiral E. R. Evans. Rear-Admiral Hyde was the first Australian officer to command the Australian Fleet. He started as apprentice in a sailing ship, gained a commission as a midshipman in the R.N.R., and served in the fleet five years, instead of the usual 12 months for reservists. He was placed on on the permanent list of the Royal Navy, as lieutenant, with seniority from July, 1902. In 1916 he was transferred to the Australian Navy and assumed command with the rank of commodore, first class, on April 30, 1926. He was promoted to his present rank in March, 1925. On February 16, 1929, he was married in Sydney to Miss Isla Robertson, of Manly.
