The pole was ripped from the top of the tram before the emergency brake could be brought into action. * * * Farmer Dead Alexander Francis Doull, a married man aged 56, a farmer residing at Henley, was found dead yesterday morning with his throat cut. He had been depressed through ill-health.— P.A. * * * Man Found Hanging John Ahearn Reidy, aged about 45, a labourer, of Carew, was found hanging in a threshing mill hut on Mr. 11. L. Chisnall's farm at Hinds on Saturday. The inquest revealed no motive for his suicide. His wife and family are in Ireland.— P.A. , * * * Death Due to Alcohol The coroner, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., continued the inquest at Te Awamutu concerning the death of Daniel McKay Seton who died in the Waikato Hospital on December 18. After hearing the evidence of Susanna Muldoon, boardinghouse-keeper, and Doctor Hiskens, the coroner returned a verdict of death from acute dilation of the stomach induced by excessive consumption of alcohol.—P.A. * * * Fall Into Lifeboat When a lifeboat was being hoisted aboard the steamer Orewa at Lyttelton Harbour on Sunday after being used by an angling party, the gear broke and the boat fell 14 feet to the water. Captain W. Jones and W. Ross, a seaman, fell head-first into the boat and were rendered unconscious. The crew rescued the injured men. A seaman named Nelson hoisted the medical flags for assistance and navigated the boat to port, where the injured men were treated for abrasions. * * * Fire Destroys House A fire which broke out early this morning in Taranaki Road, Kohimarama, completely destroyed a sixroomed house occupied by Mr. S. Grange. The occupants, who were awakened by the flames at 2.45 a.m., managed to make a huried exit. The Tamaki Fire Brigade responded to the call, but could do little to stay the progress of the flames. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. * * ♦ Elderly Man Injured Severe injuries to his head were suffered by Mr. W. Kent, aged 6U, who lives at 16 Rocklands Avenue, Mount Eden, as the result of being knocked down by a bicycle ridden by Mr. E. of 24 O’Neil Street. Ponsonby, at the bottom of College Hill, at about 7.30 this morning. Hr. Kent, who is employed by the Auckland Gas W'orks, was crossing the road to his work when the accident occurred. The St. John Ambulance was immediately summoned and the injured man was removed to the Auckland Hospital. His condition i* stated to be serious.
