PAPATOETOE SPORTS MEETING CHAMPIONS NARROWLY DEFEATED The sports carnival held by the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club on Saturday afternoon was a very successful fixture. With ideal weather conditions prevailing, there was a large attendance of the public, and some very keen and spirited contests were witnessed. Mr. A. W. Hall, M.P. for Hauraki. officially opened the sports, and the programme was under the control of Mr. W. J. Hindman, president of the club. The long list of events was disposed of up to schedule time. A programme of musical Items was contributed by the Papatoetoe Town Band. Keen interest was taken in the cycle events, the first to be held under the auspices of this recently-formed club. The New Zealand champions, J. H. Wade, of Auckland, and A. Mackie, of Christchurch, were numbered among the 26 competitors. The sprint track was in good order, and with the help of a following breeze, some remarkably fast times were recorded. The 100 yards open handicap was won by K. Carter off 10 yards, who beat A. J. Elliott, the New Zealand champion, by inches in 9 4-ss. Results were as follow: ATHLETIC EVENTS IOOYds. Maiden Local Handicap.—G. Rose, 4vds, 1; C. Drum, 4yds, 2; R. Bennett, 2yds, 3. Time, 11s. Rose took the lead in the first 30 yards and warded off a strong challenge by Drum 20 yards from the tapef and won by one foot. Bennett was two yards, back to fill third place. 100Y r ds. Open Handicap.—First heat: D. F. Gardiner, 9yds, 1; A. J. Elliott, scr, 2; A. Dawson, 10yds, 3. Time, 10s. Won by inches. Second heat: V. R. Walker, 3yds, 1; N. F. Funnel!, 7yds, 2; G. W. Millwood, 10yds, 3. Time, 10s. One yard separated the three placed men. Third heat: K. Carter, 10yds, 1; L. H. Meredith, 3iyds, 2; D. Kerr-Taylor, 9yds, 3. Time, 9 3-ss. Final.—K. Carter, 10yds, 1; A. J. Elliott, scr, 2; G. W. Millwood, 10yds, 3. Time, 9 4-ss. The three placed men crossed the line within inches of each other. Women’s Handicap, 100yds.—Miss G. Billington, 2yds, 1; Miss J. Cowling, 3yds, 2; Miss T. Richards, scr, 3. Time, 12s. 220Yds. Handicap.—First heat: D. F. Gardiner, 21yds, 1; V. R. Walker, 7yds, 2; D. Kerr-Taylor, 10yds, 3. Time, 22 3-ss. A close finish. Second heat: L. H. Meredith, 7yds, 1; E. G. Kedgley, 16yds, 2; G. W. Millwood, 20yds, 3. Time, 225. Final.—G. W. Millwood, 20yds, 1; E. G Kedgley, 16yds, 2; L. H. Meredith, 4 yds, 3. Time, 225. Millwood led the field early* in the race, and maintained it to breast the tape inches ahead of Kedgley, who was half a yard ahead of Meredith. 880Yds. Handicap.—J. Jones, 75yds, 1; W. A. Briggs, GOyds, 2; E. B. Smith, 35yds, 3* Time, 2.3 2-5. Jones started from the limit, and was not headed throughout the race. He won by three yards, with five yards separating second and third. „ Mile Handicap.—A. Bellingham, 125yds, 1; C. Scown, 40yds, 2; J. Jones, IrfOyds, 3. Time, 4.37 8-5. Bellingham won by two yards, and put in a great sprint to increase his lead from Scown. CYCLING EVENTS One Mile Cycle Handicap.—First heat: N. Casey, 115yds, 1; F. J. Avery, 130yds, 2; E. Mullane, 125yds, 3. Time, 2.37 1-5. Second heat: J. Whitten, 55yds, 1; C. G Final.—J. Whitten, 55yds, 1; N. Casey, lloyds, 2; A. J. Avery, 130yds, 3. Time, 2.36. Whitten took the lead 400 yards from the post, and was not headed, to win by a length, with two lengths separating second and third. Two-mile Cycle Handicap.—First heat: E. J. Avery, 210yds, 1; N. Casey, ISOyds, 2; E. Mullane, 240yds, 3; C. Hansen, 230yds, 4. Time, 5.30 4-5. J. H. Wade and A. Mackie both started, from scratch. In the fifth jap, Wade attempted to go inside of Mackie on a turn, and hit one of the flags and fell, bringing down Mackie. The rear wheel of Wade’s cycle was buckled. Neither rider was hurt, and both started in a later event. Second heat: J. Whitten, 95yds, 1; F J. Casey, 55yds, 2; H. R. Dwight, 45yds, 3; L. Dwight, 130yds, 4. Time, 5.45 3-5. The field rode in a bunch for the last two laps. Whitten took the lead 150 yards from the post and won by two lengths. Final.—E. J. Avery, 210yds, 1; N. Casey, ISOyds, 2; E. Mullane, 240yds, 3. Time, 5.31 3-5.
Half-Mile Novice Cycle Race.—A. Culpan, 100yds, 1; G. Jones, 75yds, 2; S. Pinfold, 10yds, 3. Time, 1.45. Won easily. Three-Mile Cycle Handicap.—J. 'Whitten, 140ydSj 1; A. Mackie, scr, 2: A. W. Pinker, 190yds, 3. Time, 8.35 1-5. The event provided the thrill of the meeting. Wade and Mackie again faced the starter from scratch, but the former fell in the fourth lap. In the seventh lap Mackie caught the field, and the eighth saw him and Whitten leading the field at a fast clip. They rode neck and neck for four laps, and when 200 yards from home Mackie put in a strong sprint and led by five lengths:. Whitten entered a strong challenge and drew level. When 50 yards from the post. Mackie had the advantage by barely half a length. Whitten here made a determined effort, and after a splendid exhibition the local rider gained the verdict by inches. Mackie’s early sprint probably cost him the race.
