Stayers and Non-Stayers
TROTTERS V. PACERS A TE AROHA PROBLEM The slow class two-mile event at Te Aroha affords an exellent opportunity for a genuine stayer of moderate calibre to pick up an easy stake on January 25. While owners generally favour the inclusion of a race for improvers over * two-mile journey with un elastic limit, when it comes down to bedrock, there are not many with candidates equal to tho task, at least that is the only impression that can be gained lrom the usual class of competitor rnw* 1 * * n such an item. The experience of country clubs catering for this section during recent years has not been of an encouraging .nature and tho records show that there ls usually one or two candidates of outstanding promise to monopolise the betting market and the actual contest. The Manawaru Handicap on the Te Aroha card gives horses with p.retenfons to tramping sixteen furlongs in 448 or better a chance to enter the ranks of stayers, with prospects of making sufficient progress at the business to be able later to reach country cup society. A Trotting Trio A glance at the list of these handicapped for this year’s race shows that very few, particularly in tho pacing section, have so far proved their claim to two-mile representation. Three trotters of tho solid and proved stayjug type, however, are included in the held, and they should keep the pacing element busy when the event is In progress. Anseline, Peterson and Sebisca have all shown adaptability for the long distance, but the question arises, are they the class of trotters that can foot it with tlio hoppled briin tllo present case the answer should be in the affirmative, as the majority of pacers taking part in the heat are of the typo that will be well served wnh a slow-run race in the early stage*, allowing them, to have their oash iri reserve over the final stages. Tho back-markers, Araclinc, Andover Haerenga Pai, however, have previously proved capable of negotiating the nineteen furlongs in a useful manner * and these two must be given a good chance of success.
Best Performer Arachne won the Hawke’s Bay Cup in splendid style, but a tendency to lose ground at tho start will discount the mare's chances. Andover is a solid customer, but for some time past he n °t been seen at his best, and until the Te Awamutu trained gelding signals a return to form his followers will he somewhat chary about his prospects. Haerenga Pal put up a sound essay when she finished second to Great Delight in the Wanganui Cup au tumn, and as she recently showed encouraging form over 3 2 furlongs at Alexandra Park, George Phipps’s mare must be seriously considered.
IPad’s Hopo at Thames last March gave a useful display over this diswhile Benefice, Haroto and Dealer have shaped well enough at a snorter distance to suggest the possibility of going further with the business. in the unknown quota Benefice will probably do best, and with Sebisca probably the strongest representatlv ® of the square-gaiters, this pair offer keen rivalry to Haerenga Pai and Dealer.
