Allom Has Been Nursed for the Tests
MJ. C. ALLOM, the M.C.C. bowler who took four New • Zealand lvickets —including a hat trick —in a maiden over in the first Test, is a very tall, well-built young man. He bowls at fast-medium pace, and his bowling gathers pace from the pitch. He swings the ball well over his head, and as he stands 6ft 3in it comes down from a great height. He makes the ball “lift,” but occasionally it keeps low. To add to the awkwardness his bowling presents to the batsman when Allom is in form, he “comes with, his arm” sufficiently to make the ball almost a true leg-break, and at. liis speed and pace from the pitch that is a very dangerous ball. Sometimes, though, the hall goes straight through. Allom came from Cambridge University into the Surrey team, as a regular member, last season, and he had some very good days, in county cricket. Tn the present M.C.C. team’s tour of New Zealand A. IT. H. Gilligan had been nursing Allom a little for the Tests.
