Class Field Will Fight Out Wellington Cup
Will Concentrate Pall It Off ?
Had the Auckland Cup been run over two miles and one yard Star Stranger would have won; or at worst he would have dead-heated with Concentrate, instead of being beaten a head. In tomorrow’s Wellington Cup Star Stranger has a chance not only of turning the tables on his Ellerslie conqueror, but also of repeating his victory of two years ago in the same race. One thing looks like stopping him—the soft track. Given the conditions, the Martian gelding will have a splendid opportunity of capturing the big Trentham handicap. The form of Star Stranger in his two outings subsequent to the Auckland Cup can be overlooked, for he was not seen at his best. However, it appears very doubtful if the Trentham course will be entirely to his liking tomorrow. One factor that must be taken into consideration is the big field. Even allowing for course scratchings there will be about 20 runners. On the other hand in both the Auckland Cup and A.R.C. Summer Cup Star Stranger was in a handy position throughout, so it would seem that he is better than ever. His trainer’s biggest worry will be the state of the track. Bringing Them Together? In the Auckland Cup Star Stranger was conceding Concentrate 161 b. Tomorrow there is 111 b, the former being allowed 51b for the head defeat. In view of Concentrate’s great tussle subsequently with Pegaway, in the A.R.C. Clifford Plate, it would not have surprised had Concentrate been given 9.0 in the Weliington Cup. Concentrate is at the peak of his form, and he may again be the first horse home. On a dry track, however, the top-weight should beat him. Much interest will be taken in the display made by Silver Paper. Fie shaped at Marton the second day as if he could have gone on with it, coming from a long way back. That part of his performance was incomprehensible. Prefers Concrete It is unlikely that In the Shade will get the ground entirely to his liking tomorrow. He likes it hard. It cannot be overlooked that the Takanini representative won here over 11 furlongs in the spring, and then beat all but Chide in the New Zealand Cup. Vertigern ran one real good race at Ellerslie—in the Summer Cup, but even on that showing he was not un to the standard of 12 months ago, when he won the Wellington Cup. He may have improved of late. Bright Glow is nicely treated, and in her case it is obvious that the handi-
capper still rates her as a non-staver. She won the Stratford Cup under *9.1, and tomorrow the pride of Taranaki has 161 b less. Panther failed to stay at Ellerslie; in addition he is a rather in-and-ouc customer. Hoylake ran very well at Awapuni, and really badly at Marton. He was scratched at 4 p.m. yesterday. Stays On Glare in all his races has finished on very strongly, and in view of his impressive dual win at Invercargill he will have to be given a good chance. White Fang’s efforts this season have mostly been confined to sprint distances, and he may be better served on Monday and Wednesday. He is a fit horse. Singleton won the Marton Cup with a couple of pounds less, and he came at the right end. He is a possibility, but hitherto Trentham has not been good track for him. In the past many Marton Cup winners Have turned out champions and near-champions. Nightmarch and Rapier, for instance. It is doubtful if Singleton will be nearly as good.
In the spring Singleton finished fourth in both the Avondale Cup and A.R.C. Mitchelson Cup, run over 10 and 12 furlongs respectively. That was probably better form than he showed in his winning effort at Marton on New Year’s Day. Shrewd is a stayer, for he was right up fourth in the Auckland Cup, after meeting with serious interference. Atholspear, Amor and The Hawk (second last year) will require to improve, but Pride, in her one outing at Riccarton during the Cup meeting, made an impression, and she stands a much better chance than generally thought. Will the Mason touch once again come out on top? The best has not yet been seen of Latin Quarter, and Stanchion’s recent efforts have certainly been encouraging. Pull Mark was out in front all the way in the Marton Cup, and only went under in the last strides to Singleton. He has 31b. less tomorrow. Full Mark, if not quite up to the best class yet, impresses as a corning Cup horse. Antique is preferred in the open mile
race. He is one of the very few gets of Tonbridge racing, and ‘he is a genuine stayer. Aurora Borealis won Over country m the winter, and over the sticks during the midsummer fixtures. The Wellington Cup is surely aiming high! It is a splendid field that will clash tomorrow, and the best can be classified in the following groups: OVER 8.0 Star Stranger Concentrate Silver Paper OVER 7.7 Vertigern Bright Glow Glare BELOW 7.7 Shrewd Pride Full Mark When all is said and done, however the horses at the top end of the handicap appear to be the most likely candidates for Cup honours. The following are the horses engaged, with their handicaps and probable riders:— WELLINGTON CUP Of £1,500; li miles. Star Stranger, 9.7 p Reed ProdPc n e t , r 3 t 4 e ' *!°.
