SEVERE TEST ON YACHTS

COMPETITORS BUFFETED IN OCEAN RACE RESULT OF FIRST HEAT Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The first heat of the yacht race for the Sayonara Cup was sailed yesterday. The competing yachts were Vanessa (New South Wales), the holder of the trophy, and Acrospire IV. (Victoria), the challenger. The latter is a new yacht and was built specially for the race. The course was one of ten miles out to sea and back. A strong southeasterly wind and rough seas tested the competing vessels to the utmost. Vanessa, with a handicap of 9 minutes 14 seconds, won easily. Vanessa, which is an eight-metre craft, actually finished 11 minutes ahead of her opponent. Acrospire IV., which is a nine-metre yacht.
