ART WORKS FOR CITY

COLLECTION FROM MR. MOSS DAVIS PICTURES AND STATUE t pictures descriptive of Captain Cook's last voyage are included in a collection of art works and historical relics, valued for shipment at £I,OOO, which has been presented to the City by Mr. Moss Davis, of London. The four framed pictures of the famous navigator’s third voyage are believed to be original water-colours. They are of scenes in the South Seas with the Endeavour and many native canoes. One shows a battle in progress between British sailors and feather-crested, helmeted Hawaiians, representing the conflict in which Cook met his death. Another feature of the collection is six plates of 18th century Sevres porcelain, which Mr. Davis describes as extremely flue examples of craftsmanship. The plates, he says, were made for the Royal Family and presented by the King as a wedding gift, atr the end of the ISth century. Other articles in the collection are: A Hth century statue of St. Nicholas, from the church at Deauville, France; an oil painting, “Windsor Castle,” by Professor Carl Heffner: an oil painting. "Her First Love-letter,” by Marcus Stone, R.A.. exhibited in the Royal Academy, 1889; a representation of a farmyard, in ivory; an ivory (whalebone) mere, and a silver medal struck by the Mint to commemorate tne Armistice.

The collection will arrive by tie steamer_ Coptic on Monday next and will be added to the Art Gallery. The Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, intends sending a letter of thanks to Mr. Davis.
