NEW REGENT
“FAST COMPANY” TOMORROW The fascinating talkie mysterythriller, “The Unholy Night,” will have its final screening at the New Regent Theatre this evening. This picture concerns a body of British Army officers who are menaced by an invisible death, and stars Roland Young, Dorothy Sebastian and Ernest Torrance. The supporting programme, which includes songs by Jack Lumsdaine, “the whispering baritone,” assisted by the Regent Syncopators, and items on the Wurlitzer organ will also have its final presentation. Tomorrow an entirely new programme will be presented, headed by “Fast Company,” a story of baseball. It is an all-talkie. Jack Oakie, the cheekiest boy of the little town of Gentryville, is also the village baseball hero, a natural homerun hitter. The Gentryville Chamber of Commerce gives Oakie a testimonial dinner. “Skeets” Gallagher, a baseball scout, tells Evelyn Brent, an actress, playing in Gentryville, that he wants her to help him sign up Oakie for the big league team. She agrees, and by vamping Jack, induces him to sign Gallagher’s contract. Jack falls badly in love with her. Oakie goes to training camp and is the joy of Sam Hardy, manager of the Yankees. But the youth starts to worry and goes off his form, because he is not receiving the letters Evelyn promised to write. .Gallagher, realising what’s up, starts writing love-letters to Jack, signing Evelyn’s name and fooling the boy. Oakie feels happy now, and throughout the season he is a home-run hitting sensation. On the eve of the year’s biggest game, however, he learns the truth. How he finally gets his girl and wins for his team makes up a most exciting finish.
