CHARGES DISMISSED
CASE AGAINST BOROUGH INSPECTOR FRESH INFORMATIONS LAID I'rom Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Wednesday. Charges against Archibald Gardner, sanitary inspector employed by the Hamilton Borough Council, of defrauding the council of sums totalling £29, were dismissed in the Magistrate’s Court today. The town clerk, William Lindo Waddel, said that accused was employed to inspect premises where food was prepared or sold to the public. During the Course of his duties he had obtained money by collecting unauthorised fees. The magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, said that accused could not be charged with defrauding the borough council as the money was not the property of tiie council. He thought that under the circumstances the offences were in the nature of a false pretences or theft. . , Mr. A. E. Webb said accused had committed theft to which he would plead guilty. The charges were then dismissed. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said it would be necessary to make 52 separate charges if it were held that the offences were not committed against the borough council. Accused was subsequently charged with stealing £1 from A. Lamberton and the hearing was adjourned until Friday.
