NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL
In welcoming members of the Northcote Borough Council last evening to the first meeting since the holidays, the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, said he felt justified in expressing the opinion that the site for the Harbour Bridge would be definitely fixed shortly, and this would'lead to increased activity in the borough. Regional town planning would be the first problem that would have to be considered by this and the other marine boroughs, if his optimism was justified. The traffic inspector submitted the recommendations as adopted by the Auckland and Suburban Traffic Inspectors’ Association. These were adopted with the exception of the recommendation “That the penal fare is unreasonable,” “That universal law is absolutely necessary to govern all classes of persons and vehicles plying for hire, especially taxi-cabs and carriers.” In the council’s opinion this was a question for the local authority to deal with. A complaint by a ratepayer that traffic direction signs erected in Queen Street by the Auckland Automobile Association were in a dangerous position was referred to the traffic inspector. Dr. H. Chesson, Medical Officer of Health for the North Auckland district, advised that the Board of Health had no legal power to define the area in the borough from which the collection of rubbish was to be exempt from delivery at the marine boroughs’ destructor, as requested by the council, but that the subject was one for his department to deal with. He was prepared to assist the local bodies by giving a ruling on the question if they so desired, but was anxious that there be unanimity between the boroughs concerned before doing so. tie would be pleased to meet representatives of the council. It was agreed to comply with the request and to accompany Dr. Chesson on a tour of the borough. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the report of the commission which recently sat to consider a proposal to include certain lands in the Waitemata County in the Borough of Birkenhead. It was decided to thank the Minister of Internal Affairs for forwarding the commission’s comments and that he be informed that should the Waitemata County ratepayers signify by petition their desire to join Northeote. that the council did not anticipate any difficulty in respect to enlarging its boundaries to include the Waitemata County area on both sides of Onewa Road to the boundary of the Kauri Gully stream, or the whole area as far north as Pupuke Road. The Mayor said that the opinion of the commission was shared by the council. If there were to be any absorption by either of the boroughs of the triangular county area between Birkenhead and Northeote, the whole of the land within the county on both sides of Onewa Road to the Kauri Gully Stream or Pupuke Road should be the area to be dealt with. The council had not interfered in any way in connection with the recent petition, no representation of any kind being made at the commission on behalf of the Northeote Borough. The Minister of Internal Affairs now apparently invited an expression of the council’s views should the ratepayers concerned desire to join Northcote. The Mayor’s remarks were fully endorsed by other members of the council.
