SUCCESSFUL MEETING AT PAPATOETOE CLOSE FINISHES The Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held another very successful evening meeting on the Papatoetoe Recreation Reserve last evening. Two athletic and one cycling events were run, and some spirited finishes were witnessed by a good attendance of spectators. Details were: 75 Yards Handicap.—A. Dawson, Iyd, i* ' • Anderson. ahead in the lirst 25 yards and warded off a strong challenge from McKenzie, to win by a foot, with inches separating Anderson, who tilled third place. 440 Yards Handicap.—ll. McKenzie. 10yds, 1; V. Smytheman, 20yds, 2; C. Anderson, 15yds, 3. Time. 55 3-ss. Anderson set a solid pace from the start and with half the distance covered he led the iield by eight yards, when McKenzie and Smytheman entered a determined challenge 50 yards from the tape. McKenzie took the lead and led the field home, with Smytheman two feet behind to fill second place, and gaining ground. Anderson was 10 yards back, third. Half-mile Cycle Handicap.—R. Culpan, 1; G .Jones, 2; R. Culpan, 3. SATURDAY’S SPORTS GOOD ENTRIES RECEIVED The second meeting of the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, to be held on Saturday, promises to be a very successful function. Eleven running and eight cycling events will be disposed of during the afternoon. For these, 179 nominations from 93 individual competitors have been received. These Include A. J. Elliott (New Zealand champion), L. H. Meredith, D. Kerr-Taylor, N. JET. Cooper and C. Scown, Auckland provincial title holders; L. C. Barker, one of the leading half-milers of Auckland, and other promising foot runners. In the cycling events, speed merchants of New Zealand fame will be seen in J. IT. Wade and A. Mackie (New Zealand champions), H. R. Dwight (road racing champion), F. J. Casey (ex-champion of Auckland), and all the leading riders. These are the same riders who compete at the Western Springs Stadium, and their appearance at the suburban meeting should be a great draw. The cycling track is in good order and on the day promises to equal anything available in grass tracks in or around Auckland.
