SANDERS CUP CONTEST

ARRANGEMENTS FINALISED DISCUSSION ON REMITS Preparations for the Sanders Memorial Clip yachting contest, which begins on the YVaitemata Harbour on Tuesday, January 28, were advanced a further stage at a meeting of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association last evening. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron advised that in respect to a request for a club donation to the funds of the contest, it had decided to adhere to its previous decision that it could officially offer no assistance monetarily unless the ages of crews competing in the contests were restricted to under 21 years. Several other clubs wrote that although in general sympathy with the contest they could not afford this year to give financial assistance. One small club gave £ 1 Is. The Yacht Squadron and the Takapuna Boating Club, however, stated that opportunity w’ould be given members to make individual subscriptions if they so desired. The Victoria Cruising Club, the Akarana Yacht Club, the Takapuna Boating Club, the Tamaki Y’acht Club, the Ponsonby Cruising Club and the Yacht Squadron have offered to entertain the visiting crews. Canterbury’s nomination of Colleen instead of Betty was approved, and Southland’s nomination of Val accepted. The chairman, Mr. C. H. T. Palmer, and the secretary, Mr. A. J. Collings, were appointed as the association’s delegates to the Dominion yachting conference, fixed for January 27, in conjunction ■with the contest. On the proposal of Wellington, supported by Otago, that a Dominion conference be set up for the control of all yachting, speed-boat and outboard inter-provincial cup contests, the delegates were instructed to vote against the scheme at the conference. The association felt that such a controlling body woLild be impracticable, chiefly on the score of expense. Also, it was felt that there was no reason why Auckland should hand over the ownership of the Sanders, Cornwell and Masport Cups, and the interprovincial outboard challenge shield. S€;lection of the crew to sail Avalon, defender of the cup, on behalf of Auckland, was left over until next week’s meeting. In the meantime Mr. Frank Cloke, owner of the boat, will be asked to nominate a crew for the association’s approval. The visiting crews will be accorded a reception by the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, in the squadron rooms, on Monday, January 27. The Otago Yacht and Motor-Boat Association forwarded a remit for discussion at the conference, asking that the Sanders Cup contests be held by the provinces in rotation, irrespective of which province wins the cup. The delegates were instructed to vote against the proposal. Mr. Palmer mentioned that outboard racing and the question of New Zealand championships for outboards would be discussed by special representatives at the conference, and it was decided to invite delegates from the Russell Regatta Club and the Outboard Association to attend the Dominion Conference.
