ROTORUA RAILWAYMEN
BIG PICNIC AT TIRAU Special to THE SUN ROTORUA, Monday. Railway employees are good workers but they believe in giving themseives, their wives and youngsters a good holiday occasionally. On Sunday last they knocked off work to carry bricks by running an excursion train from Rotorua to Tirau, taking a large number of friends and their families from Rotorua and intermediate stations. Two engines were required to haul an extra number of carriages. All labour was entirely voluntary and those who were privileged to attend enjoyed a glorious day in the country. The railwaymen are generous in their efforts to please and gave the children the time of their lives. First, second and third prizes were given in all events for all ages and, in addition, every child was given a toy before embarking on the homeward-bound train. Lolly scrambles kept them excited between races and free ice creams were provided. Great credit is due to the secretary, Mr. T. A. Cox, and the chairman of the railwaymen’s committee, Mr. YV. 3?. McLeod, for their organisation work. The Rotorua. Municipal Band was In attendance and helped considerably toward the enjoyment of the outing.
