COUNTERFEIT COINS

NOT VERY MANY IN . CIRCULATION BAD HALF-CROWNS Although counterfeit coins ha._ circulated freely in Christchurch for some time past, very few have made their appearance in Auckland. “During the past year we have experienced very few counterfeit coins or notes,” said an Auckland bank manager on Saturday. “Following the report of these coins being circulated in the South, local business, people no doubt have been alert for any attempts to pass them.” A counterfeit half-crown was shown to a Sun representative by a business man. Except for the fact that, when dropped on the counter, it produced no answering ring, the coin on a casual glance looked quite genuine. To the careful observer, however, a certain roughness in the milling was apparent. This was the only counterfeit coin that had come under hi 4 knowledge during the holiday season. Inquiries made at one of the lead* ing picture theatres revealed the fact that, as far as they were aware, they had not handled a single counterfeit coin. The cashier at another theatre said there were always a few in circulation, and at the present time of more than usual.
