SWIMMING BAN
PERMISSION SOUGHT FOR AUSTRALIANS REQUEST FROM AUCKLAND The Australian Swimming Union is being requested by the Mount Eden Swimming Club to permit the Sydney swimmers, Owen Griffiths and Noel Ryan, to swim next Thursday evening at the Tepid Baths. A surprise was caused on Saturday by the cabled orders of Mr. James Taylor, president of the Australian Union, forbidding Griffiths and Ryan to compete further in New Zealand, although both are officially engaged to swim once more in Auckland. For the committee of the Mount Eden Club, the secretary, Air. H. Moore, sent this message this morning to the New Zealand Swimming Council at Christchurch; "My committee requests that the council cable the president of the Australian Union asking that Ryan and Griffiths be permitted to compete at Auckland on Thursday. It also requests you to state that the Australians are much appreciated in Auckland anti their non-appearance would he detrimental to the sport here.” Mr. Moore made it clear that the Australians were desirous of remaining in Auckland. In a conference this morning, they asked the club to wire the council saying that they needed a rest after their New Zealand tour. This would be possible if they remained in New Zealand, accepting the council’s offer of a visit to Mount Cook, as planned. The Australian Union’s ban has apparently been caused by reports of trouble 011 tho tour. Auckland, however. has had no share in any of the reported difficulties. At this stage, it Is not possible for the swimmers to return in time for their State championships. Should the Australian Union persist in its orders to the swimmers, the Mount Eden Club will carry its carnival through in spite of financial loss incurred in bringing the Australians north. The club now intends to conduct an Auckland championship for men over 50 yards, a women’s breaststroke race in which Miss Gladys Pidgeon, Dominion record holder, will race, and an attempt by G. Bridson on the 500 metres record.
