LIMPS INTO PORT

CANADIAN HIGHLANDER STRIPS PROPELLER The Canadian National Steamship 3 steamer Canadian Highlander, which arrived at Auckland this morning from Montreal, stripped one of her propellor blades when she was 3,700 miles from Auckland. The vessel, which is loaded with Canadian merchandise, left Montreal on November 09, and arrived at Sydney, Cape Breton, on December 2, after being delayed two days in the St. Lawrence River by bad weather. After lifting her cargo at Sydney the vessel left there on December 4, but as soon as she cleared port ran Into heavy weather, which delayed her four days. Once clear of the St. Lawrence Gulf, the Canadian Highlander had fine weather until four days ago, when she experienced further heavy weather. It was at 1.30 p.m. on December 26 when she cast one of her blades. The vessel gave a sudden shake which vibrated the whole ship. Her engines were Immediately stopped, and soundings were taken. However, after a thorough examination of the ship the vessel proceeded on her way, the only explanation being that she must have cast a blade off. On arrival this morning it was found that the vessel had broken one of her blades off. It has not yet been decided whether the ship will dock at Auckland, but it is most likely she will wait till she gets to Dunedin to have a spare blade fitted. Since the Canadian Highlander broke her blade she has only been able to do 91 knots, against her usual 12 knots.
