ANSWERS TO PUZZLED GARDENERS
Aspidistra.—Scales on the leaves of aspidistra can be removed by carefully sponging the leaves with tepid water and afterward wiping the affected parts with a rag dipped in red spraying oil broken down as directed on the bottle. After the pest has been eradicated, keep the pliant sponged weekly with fresh water to prevent further attacks. A.T., Kingsland.—(l) Autumn seed potatoes can be sown as late as the end of March. It all depends on the position and the amount of early frosts they are subject to. If frosts come early where they are to be set, I would advise planting as soon as seed is available. (2) You could certainly replant your own seed provided you spread it out in the sun to thoroughly green before setting. Plant in a different plot of ground. (3) If the water supply is forthcoming, 90-day'* corn may still be sown. Should the weather set in very dry during February and March, little growth can be expected from newlysown seed, and probably premature cobs on thin dwarfed stalks will be the result. If, on the other hand, you can apply water during the dry spell, your returns should be quite good.
