DISMAL MORNING
HEAVY RAIN AND THUNDER STREETS AWASH Crashing peals of thunder and rain falling almost in sheets presented a dismal prospect to early workers shortly before seven o’clock this morning. In the City and suburbs streets were awash and all those abroad at that hour had quickly to take shelter until the storm passed over. For the 24 hours previous to nine o'clock this morning .71 inches of rain had been recorded at Albert Park. As very little rain fell yesterday this figure practically represents the. early morning fall up till nine o’clock. Fortunately the rain eased off in volume before the bulk of the City workers needed to leave nome, and by the time the nine o’clock contingent left for the City the storm had decreased to nothing worse than a fairly heavy drizzle, although sufficient to create a demand for transport that fully taxed the resources of tram and other transport systems. Continuing throughout the morning the rain also considerably affected the usual Friday business, there being a noticeable falling off in the numbers usually seen in the City streets on the big shopping day. Heavy rain was also reported in the North Auckland district.
