DISPUTE OVER CREW
SANDERS CUP BOAT WITHDRAWN ASSOCIATION’S ACTION Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. General astonishment was expressed this evening at the meeting of the Canterbury Yachting and Power-Boat Association when letters were received from Mr. George G. Andrews, owner of Betty, and lan Treleaven, who was appointed as skipper of the boat in the Sanders Cup contests this year. Mr. Andrews stated that as the regular crew had not been appointed for this race he wished to withdraw Betty, while Treleaven stated that for similar reasons he did not wish to act as skipper.
The chairman, Mr. J. H. Wood, explained that the whole trouble arose through the fact that the association had refused to approve of one of the men selected by Treleaven for his crew. This person was unfinancial to two clubs and at present was not a member of any club although in the course of the last few days he had applied for membership. Under the circumstances the association could not possibly sanction his selection. Considerable dissatisfaction was expressed at the attitude taken up by Messrs. Andrews and Treleaven when efforts had been made to persuade them to reconsider their decision. It was decided that in the event of their not doing so by tomorrow evening the Colleen will be appointed as the Canterbury representative with P. Collins as skipper. He will be requested to recommend a crew for the association’s approval.
