N.Z. STOCK MARKETS

HEAVY KILLINGS OF LAMB SPACE TAXED By R.W.C. Killings of fat lambs continue heavy at all North Island works. In the Auckland Province, difficulty is being experienced in coping with applications for space, and indications are that the present position will hold until the end of the month. Xo change in the schedule prices offered for export has been made over the holidays, up to 7'id being offered on the hooks far best quality lamb under 361 b. The increasing weight of wool on the lambs will help exporters to maintain these prices, although what the future holds it is hard to say. There is a report current at the moment that one big firm operating in the South has offered a big parcel of lamb for shipment to the end of March at 84d a lb c.i.f. London, without attracting buyers. How much reliance can be placed on this is questionable, but it is certain that overseas buyers are operating with a great deal of caution. Prices for the Christmas Shipment Reports are now coming to hand relative to the reception accorded the shipment sent forward from Auckland and Hawke’s Bay on the Remuera in time to catch the Christmas market at Home. Messrs. Sutton and Sutton, meat exporters, of Auckland, advise receipt of a cablegram from their London agents which states that a parcel disposed of on the Smithfield market on their behalf made up to a lb. The cablegram added the rather obvious fact that these prices would not be maintained. Short Market at Westfield Yesterday’s market at Westfield was one of the shortest seen in those yards for several years. Only 131 head of steer beef came forward, and the total cattle yarding was slightly under 400 head. Sheep, pigs, and calves were also yarded in smaller numbers than usual. The market all round had a very firm tone. Cattle sold at slightly better prices than at late sales, best ox making to 43s a hundred; choicest cow and heifer beef, in isolated cases, made to 40s a hundred.

The market for a small yarding of fat sheep was very firm at late rates. Approximately 470 head of fat lambs came forward to meet a firm market. There was very little of outstanding quality in the offering. Both fat and store pigs sold freely at slightly better prices. Baconers made to £4 4s; porkers, to £2 18s. Johnsonville Market At the Johnsonville (Wellington) sale yesterday, there was an average yarding of all classes of stock, and a good sale resulted, prices showing no alteration as compared with the last few weeks’ sales. The cattle yarded were all bullocks. The quality was good and competition was keen throughout the sale. A consignment of vealers offered met with a ready sale. The sheep yarded comprised good quality wethers and ewes, with a few pens of heavy-weights. A total clearance was effected at prices on a par with late rates. The lambs offered were not up to the Lisual standard. Prices, however, were above export parity. Extra heavy bullocks made £l6 10s to £l7; heavy bullocks, £ls to £l6 2s 6d ; vealers, £3 to £4 10s; heavy wethers, 27s to 27s 9d: medium weththers, 26s to 26s 6d; heavy ewes, 18s to 20s; medium ewes, 17s to 17s 6d; lambs, 18s 6d to 23s 6d.

Big Sale at Addington Yesterday’s market at Addington was the first since December 19, and in consequence the major sections drew large entries. Export buyers were operating in both the fat lamb and fat sheep sections. An entry of 2,000 fat lambs sold at an average price of B£d to 83d a lb. An over-supply of fat sheep saw values for wethers drop 7s a head on the prices at the last sale; ewes were down Is to Is 6d a head on previous sale. Extra prime wethers made to 365; extra prime ewes, to 29s 4d. There was an entry of 544 head of fat cattle with cows over-supplied. Prime steers were not penned in sufficient numbers, and met with keen competition, easily maintaining the last sale’s values, but cows and heifers declined by £1 a head, and in the ease of the former up to £ 1 10s. Best me*dium-weight prime beef made from 44s to 47s a 1001 b; good, 41s to 43s 6d: heavy steer beef, 40s to 435; good cow beef, to 40s; secondary, 32s to 355; light and rough, to 295. Baconers made from 6d to 8d a lb; porkers, from 7d to 8d a lb.
