SWEPT DOWN HARBOUR

ORDEAL FOR SHIP’S OFFICER Caught by the strong outgoing tide when rowing a heavy ship's boat in the harbour yesterday afternoon, the mate of the auxiliary schooner Piri, Mr. Bradney, had an experience that he will long remember. The Piri is anchored in Hobson Bay and early in the afternoon Mr. Bradney started to row in the ship’s boat to Devonport to obtain stores. The boat had been in the water some time and the bottom was thick with weed. The condition of the boat, coupled with the strong tide, made it difficult for rowing and Mr. Bradney found himself being carried down the harbour. For a long time he battled strenuously against the current. Despite his exertions he was swept round North Head. His hands were blistered anil he was nearly exhausted when the wind sprang up and he was able to hoist a sail and land at Narrow Neck Beach. His hands were in too bad a state to attempt to row the heavy boat back to the harbour, and he enlisted the services of two youths to row him back to the ship.
