SPEEDY FIGHTERS

NEW BRITISH AIR FORCE MACHINES SUPERIORITY CLAIMED Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The new service machines of high flying speed which have been introduced today into the Royal Air Force are the direct result of experience gained in the Schneider Cup Trophy competitions. It is declared that they justify the risks and the large expenditure involved in those competitions. The engines were used in the British machines which broke the world's speed record in the contest over the Solent last year. In 1925 America gained the world s record at what was then regarded as the phenomenal speed of 177 miles an hour. For some time past the British Royal Air Force has had in service Bristol Bulldog machines with a speed in excess of this. These are machines that are not mere racers, but they carry full equipment. The machines now being put into service mark a further advance and are claimed to be easily superior in performance to any machine produced abroad.
