SEA TERROR
War in the future will see great underwater cruisers travelling hundreds of feet deep to enemy coasts. The French Navy have already completed one such new terror of the sea. It is the Surcouf, the greatest submarine in the world. The Surcouf is a Jules Verne dream realised. She is actually an underwater cruiser, 400 ft long, with a crew of 150 officers and men, carrying four 5.5 in guns in armoured turrets, and with a small seaplane housed in a watertight hangar on her deck. She also carries sufficient fuel for a voyage of 13,000 miles—half-way round the world—without calling at a port. The Surcouf can dive 80ft deeper than any other submarine, she has storage for 30 torpedoes of the latest and most destructive model, and is thickly armoured against shells and bombs.
