SOUTHLAND DEFEATED

INNINGS AND 104 RUNS DEADLY BOWLING BY M.C.C. Press Association INVERCARGILL. Monday. The match between the M.C.C. team and Southland was concluded today in brilliant sunshine. The Englishmen won by an innings and 104 runs. The visitors had made 284 for nine wickets on Saturday and. contrary to expectations, did not declare their innings closed. The not-out men, Allom and Cornford. carried the score to 309 before the former was bowled by Coupland. The partnership had added 106. The local batsmen made a poor showing and were dismissed for 105 in the first innings and for 100 in the second. The Southland players seemed quite incapable of dealing with the slow bowling of Woolley, Duleepsinhji and Legge. Shortly before the close of Southland’s first innings the English wicketkeeper Cornford was struck above the eye by a ball and had to leave the field, his place behind the stumps being taken by Earle. Cornford received medical attention and had to have several stitches in the wound. Details of the scores are:— — M.C.C.
