February—Dance and prize night or CONTEST FOR MACHINE encouraging; cinder track RACERS BLANDFORD PARK SCHEME Interest among dirt track racers at Blandford Park is being stimulated by competition for a special racing machine presented by one of the directors of the speedway company. Points will be awarded this season as follow; —First, 3 points; second, 2 points; and third, 1. The rider who secures most points will thus hat e a mount ready for next season. This competition is open to all riders, but a special contest for private owner-riders only has been begun for the “G. and M. ’ Blandford Cup, valued at £5 ss. This will also be decided this season, points being awarded as before. However, riders employed or assisted by motor-cycle firms or garages, or who are connected
with the trade in any way will not be eligible. This should go far to foster the sporting side of the game by encouraging those who enjoy racing apart from its commercial aspects. The definition of a private owner has been laid down as follows by the Pioneer Sports Club, Christchurch: “A private owner is one who tunes, and registers the machine of which he is the bona fide owner, and who does not gain his living either partly or wholly from the motor-cycle industry.” It is interesting to note in this respect that owner-riders are being encouraged in beach racing, too, by an annual contest for the McLaren Cup, presented by the McLaren brothers for competition at the Sport Club’s Muriwai meeting. This trophy is for a 20mile race, and promises to be the main contest of future meetings. The conditions, however, do not prevent the rider being assisted by or employed in a garage, provided he owns the machine he rides. The cup is held at present by Jack Reiman, a Royal Enfield rider.
