The Care of the Car TIP IN JACKING UP Sometimes when wheel changing is required the deflated tyre has brought the axle so low that the jack cannot easily be put under it. A proved way of overcoming this trouble is to place the spare wheel immediately in front of or behind the deflated tyre, and then push the car on to the spare wheel. The spare can be taken away as soon as the jack has lifted the car. A HANDY TOOL Often one is “up against it” when a rivet or holt has to be inserted in a place not accessible «to the hands. Here is how to do it with tongs. Take a lath long enough to reach the place" where the rivet is to be inserted, and bolt to its end a piece of flat spring steel slotted to take the shank of the rivet. The bolt or rivet can then be gripped by its head, between the steel grip and the lath, and pushed into place. Hold, with the fingers, the part projecting through the hole, while a metal bar is placed under its head to take the strain of •riveting. CLEANING FILES An excellent way to clean files, whether fine or coarse, is to rub them with a piece of coke. Should the coke become full of grease when used on fine files, rub it on a rough file. This will make the coke clean again and the file will be cleaned at the same time. CLEANING GLASS Hard substances which collect on the windshield or other glass can be readily removed by pushing a safety razor blade along the surface. This will cut away all the spots and the glass will not be scratched. The blade should be held in a spring paper clip, or can be fitted in a cork.
