IRISH TYPES FOUND

JOHN McCORMACK’S TALKIE After searching all Ireland for a leading lady for John McCormack’s first talking picture and for a youth to play another leading role, Director Frank Borzage at last had discovered them. He had almost given up hope of finding them in Ireland, where most of the pictures had been shot, and had decided to try his luck with a Hollywood colleen. Then he discovered Maureen O’Sullivan and Thomas Clifford as an answer to his prayers. Maureen, 18, a brunette with bobbed hair, and a typical example of the modern Irish type of schoolgirl, was found, by Borzage in a Dublin restau-* rant. After working for a week in McCormack's picture Maureen was given a new talking picture test which was so satisfactory that she was signed to a five year contract. ' The boy, Thomas, is only 11. He is a true Celtic type with an unusually good voice for the audible film. He made his unimportant role so prominent by his initiative action, that Borzage gave him the role of “Tad,” in the picture and signed him to a fiveyear contract. “Hell’s Angels,” in its third year of production, now has June Winton and Lena Yalena added to its cast. Fraulein Malena, German actress, plays the part of a German barmaid in the beer garden sequences. There are some 200 extras, most of them in native Bavarian costume, tilting steins in this episode. Miss Winton will appear as a German baroness. 1 Ben Lyon. James Hall. Lucien Prival j and John Darrow are all at work on the talking version of the air spectacle.
