CYCLONE HITS COAST

QUEENSLAND SHIPPING ENDANGERED MOUNTAINOUS SEAS Reed. 11.30 a.m. BRISBANE, Sunday. A cyclone suddenly descended on the Queensland coast yesterday, catching shipping unawares. The steamer Morinda suffered the full force of the gale and hove-to. The Kallatina arrived at Cooktown from Thursday Island many hours late. The passengers told a thrilling story of their experiences. Mountainous seas buffeted the ship all night and at one stage the position was so serious that lifebuoys and lifebelts were issued to the passengers and crew. To add to the danger the steering apparatus failed and the vessel was steered through the cyclone by temporary means. All along the coast shipping was held up and telegraphic communication north of Townsville was interrupted.
