IMPROVED TELEPHONES

AUCKLAND AND ROTORUA LINKED “WIRED WIRELESS” USED Telephone communication between Auckland and Rotorua has been vastly improved by the installation of a direct carrier current, which is now familiarly known as “wired wireless.’’ This was installed for the Christmas and New Year traffic, and has been a great benefit to users of the telephone. “Wired wireless,” which has made telephone conversation almost perfect, is high frequency current over the existing telephone wires and, except for the additional apparatus at either end of the circuits, requires no extra outlay in materials. It works in the same manner as amplified wireless, except that the voices are confined io the wires, and users of the telephone are able to hear each other quite clearly and without interruption.

GREATLY IMPROVED The telephone service throughout New Zealand is being greatly improved by the installation of “wired wireless.” There are three channels now working between Auckland and Hamilton, and one between Auckland and Rotorua. Hamilton and Wellington are now connected with three of these channels, and Napier and Wellington with one. The connection with the South Island has also been made, with the result that telephone talks over long distances no longer mean strained ears and loud voices. Gradually the whole of the Dominion will be linked by “wired wireless” at very little extra cost to the Department. No extra wires or supporting poles are required. In future all trunk telephone extensions will be carrier current. Auckland is well served at the present time, but as apparatus comes to hand for installations in other parts of the Dominion, this city will be brought much nearer, telephonically. to the other centres throughout New Zealand. NO WAITING LIST IN CITY In the City itself the department is able to cope with ail demands of home and office telephones. There is no waiting list at presen;, and if the apparatus is available a telephone can be installed as soon as it is a3ked for.
