FLOODS IN FRANKLIN

CARS TOWED THROUGH WATER SLIPS IN HUNUA GORGE Special to THE SUN 'PUKEKOHE, Saturday. The heavy rain during the weekend caused the waters of the Maungatawhiri River to overflow and flood the Paeroa-Pokeno highway, and Mangatawhiri Valley Road. Today horses were put into commission by neighbouring settlers, and with this help cars were assisted through. However, it was a slow proceeding, and at either end throughout tlie afternoon was a large queue oi. waiting' cars. Many cars, with parties of campers, returned home after a night in tents. After being towed through some of the motorists found their troubles were not then at an end, as water had penetrated to the electrical system of the car and had to be removed before the car could be started. By evening there were still a large number of vehicles, including cream-laden lorries, to "be towed through. A number of boys from the Auckland Y.M.C.A. were unable to reach their camp at Hunua owing to the floods, and were accommodated in a wool-shed. Several slips have occurred on the Hunua Gorge.
