A Little World for Little People
FRIENDSHIP IS A STEADY LIGHT SHINING IN DARK PLACES
LUCKY CHARMS
“U/HKX the Old Tear went out I said some magic things to IT make the New Year a lucky one,” said the Little Thought, smoothing out a tiny four-leaved clover that a Sunbeam had sent him, “and I thought of black cats and horseshoes and everything like that. And the Old Year said to me, ‘Now, you be careful of the wee New Year, Little Thought, because he r s only a baby. When he's about three days old he will be able to play 'with you, because New Years grow up very quickly.’ ” ‘T took a peep at him just before he opened his eyes,” said the Woodpecker, “and I thought he looked a chubby, contented baby. But, you know, I never have to think of black cats or horseshoes or four-leaved clovers or any of those things because I carry a lucky charm with me wherever I go.” “Where is it?” asked the Little .Thought, earnestly. “I can’t see it.” “No, of course you can’t. It’s tucked snugly away. If I gave it to you I would die.” “Oh,” said the Little Thought, with a horrified gasp, “I wouldn’t dream of taking it! Mister Doorkeeper, the Woodpecker has a lucky charm that he carries about with him, but it’s a secret, and he won’t show it to anyone.” "Perhaps it’s a swastika,” suggested the Doorkeeper. “Or a crooked sixpence,” added the Joyshop man. “Or a rabbit’s paw,” called the Dawn Lady. “All wrong.” chuckled the Woodpecker. “Perhaps the smallest. Pixie Postman knows. Do you, my gallant little friend ?” “I have a suspicion,” murmured the smallest Pixie Postman. “It’s that silver whistle I lost last year.” “Worse and worse and infinitely worse,” answered ’the Woodpecker. “How long havf' you had it?” asked the Little Thought. “Always.” “We give it up,” said the Happy Town chorus. “Well,” confessed the Woodpecker, “it’s really nothing more serious than a wish- _ » “Is there a prize ?” piped the smallest Pixie Postman.' __ “If so, he’s won!” * '
