Onehunga’s Good Win

CENTRE BOWLING TOURNAMENT Successful Fixture THE Auckland Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament concluded yesterday afternoon when the Onehunga rink, skipped by E. B. Wright, defeated prey Lynn (Whittle) in the final. Although Onehunga early took the lead and finished with a comfortable winning margin, the final provided an enjoyable and interesting climax to a very successful tournament. Competition throughout has been very keen and, particularly in the inter-sectional play, many interesting games were seen.

With Buckley carrying the jack, Onehunga lay two on the first head. On the next head, when Vella had drawn the shot for two and repeated it for three, Buckley reversed the situation by dragging the jack for three. However, Wright ran them off with a good shot and lay one, making the score 3 —o. A single came to Onehunga on the next head, and in the fourth its position was further improved when five were added to the total. The total was now 9—o.

Driving well with his last ball, Whittle got a single on the fifth, and repeated it on the sixth head. He had drawn close and Wright pushed one of his own out, making the score 9 —2. The following head saw Buckley fall on the jack, but Vella ran it off and played his second ball to pair it. With his first bowl Whittle dragged the jack a yard for 3, but Wright, with a good draw, saved two shots, the score being 9 —3. When the 11th head had been reached the score was 17—3 in Onehunga’s favour, and Wright, driving Liversidge out, scored two. Although Wright drove four bowls out in the 12th, he left Whittle one, and with the same player drawing another, 19 —5 was registered. Both teams played wide on the “devil’s” head. Buckley drove and missed with his first, but got the two shot bowls clean and kitty clean with his second. Vella drew the shot dead, and Whittle drove twice and missed. The score was 20—5. Onehunga continued to score well. The 14th went to Whittle, who lay two with a nice shot. Grey Lynn also scored on the next, but Wright killed the head. On the replay Green put his second bowl right on top of the jack and Wright drew two more, making him five for the head. Onehunga 25, Grey Lynn 7. From this head on Grey Lynn commenced to improve its position, getting singles on the 16th and 17th. In the 18th Buckley drew the jack for four. Wright saved two with a good drive, but Whittle drew one close up for three. On the 20th Whittle put Vella out, lay two, and drew another with his second bowl. The final scores were:—Onehunga (J. E. Green, J. E. Cowell, S. Vella, E. B. Wriglit) 26, Grey Lynn (W. Mincham, W. Liversidge, E. Buckley, and H. Whittle) 16.
