GOLDEN WEDDING

MR. AND MRS. W. H. LUCAS Special to THE SUE THAMES, Today. The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. W H. Lucas, of Thames, was celebrated on New Year's Day. They were married at Newton on January 1, 1880. Mr. Lucas was born in Manchester and came to New Zealand in the ship Ironsides with his parents, in 18G4. He came to Thames on the declaration of the goldfield, being among the first to land, in August, 1867. He worked in various occupations and became a prominent mine manager. Mr. Lucas served on the Borough Council for 25 years. He has been a member of the licensing bench for 25 years, a justice of the peace for 3S years, district coroner for 20 years, secretary of the Miners’ Union for 35 years, and secretary of the Co-opera-tive Building Society for 22 years. Ho is one of the oldest living members of the Masonic Lodge Sir Walter Scott, and the Hauraki Royal Arch Chapter. For 45 years Mr. Lucas served as a volunteer, and retired with the rank of major, bgdng still on the Army list with that rank. He won the New Zealand rifle championship belt at Wellington in 1885, and was awarded the Victorian decoration in 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Lucas have one daughter, Mrs. G. L. Shaw, of Thames.
