AERIALISMS

The first portion of the Napier Radio Society’s gift of wireless receiving sets for the patients in the Napier hospital has been handed over to the institution. IVhen completed the installations will comprise 300 pairs of headphones and 25 loud speakers, the whole being operated from an all-electric receiving set, wi n power amplifier. A gramophone attachment will be provided so that patients may be entertained if no radio entertainment is available. The whole scheme’ will cost <£Bso, and will be publicly subscribed. There are many interesting fakes in the production of radio plays. The operator of the effect* usea a large number of ‘make-believes/* which have little association or similarity to stage “noises.” It was quickly found out that a draped studio, which deadened all sounds, required something quite different from the stage. For instance, a revolver shot is best produced by means of a drum covered by a sheet of tin, on top of which is a leather cushion. One sharp blow with a piece of cane makes a realistically terrifying revolver shot. Recently in a Cape Town studio, the flooding of the River Nile was managed by placing a microphone near a watertap, with a half-filled bucket under it. The tap was turned on and the engineer, with a finger under the outlet, squirted “the mighty waters of the Nile” into the bucket, until the dramatic climax was reached.
