CALEDONIAN SPORTS

MEETING AT WAIPU SUCCESS, DESPITE RAIN i From Our Own Correspondent WHANGAREI, Wednesday. The Waipu Caledonian Society’s sports were held today at Waipu. The weather was unfavourable, heavy rain falling from ten o’clock till 4 p.m. This year was the 59th annual gathering. the society having been established in 1871. Owing to rain, the piping and dancing events, which take pride of place on the programme, were held in the Waipu Caledonian Hall. Despite the weather, there was a very good attendance of the public. All events attracted good fields, and in the athletic section there were some close results, including two ties. In the piping and dancing events, the judge, Mr: <;. Stronach, of Taumarunui. expressed his pleasure at the standard of the performers, which was quite equal to any other similar meetings in the Dominion. Results were: ATHLETIC EVENTS the Weight.—X.
