NORTH ISLAND TITLES
TOURNEY IN DRIZZLE AT WANGANUI HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY From Our Own Correspondent WANGANUI, Wednesday. The North Island Tennis Championships commenced today in dull weather. Early in the morning a light drizzle fell and just before lunch a heavy shower impeded play. Play throughout the day was good and was equal to provincial tournaments in England, according to an English visitor. In addition to the tennis association trophies, Mr. Parsons, of Barcelona, Spain, presented trophies for the women’s and men’s championship singles. Mr. Parsons’ father was the first to have a court on the West Coast 60 years ago. Mrs. Melody was easily the best woman player today. Mrs. Adams was detained in Wellington by the wedding of her cousin, Miss Tracey, a former champion. Stedman and Chapters were both at the top of their game, though the damp courts affected their game slightly. With promising dry weather they should go far. MEN’S SINGLES First Round.—E.
