In the course of a New Year address in Canterbury Cathedral the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Cosmo Lang, said the experience of the past year had shown that Britain's centurylong leadership in commerce and industry was seriously threatened. Competitors had arisen to supplant Britain in markets where she had thought her position was assured. More than 1,000,000 persons were unemployed and the future was clouded with uncertainty. Wise political and economic measures might provide partial remedies for the nation’s sickness, but the cure could only come through restoring and reinvigorating the strength of the whole body. The people were tending to rely too much upon State ai'd instead of fulfilling their personal responsibilities.
