CANADIAN BOWLERS

WELCOME AT WHANGAREI From. Our Own Correspondent WHANGAREI, Monday. Tli© Canadian bowlers arrived at AYliaiigarei yesterday afternoon from Auckland and were tendered a civic reception in the Town Hall. The party was accompanied by Mr. R. Marshall, New Zealand Tourist Department, Mr. T. H. Steadman, Northern Bowling Centre, Mr. F. Jongs, Mayor of Durgaville, and Mr. A. R. Crane, of the Whangarei Bowling Club. At the railway station the party was met by Mr. T. H. Wilson, president of the Northern Bowling Centre, and each woman member of the party was presented with a bouquet by M.ss B. Wilson, daughter of the president of the Northern Bowling Centre. A large crowd congregated in the Town Hall to welcome the bowlers. The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, who presided, said he hoped the visitors would carry away happy memories of their visit to Whangarei. Their visit would help to cement the bonds of friendship existing between Canada and this Dominion. Mr. F. J. Murdoch, M.P. for Marsden, Mr. W. Wells, chairman of the Whangarei County Council, and Mr. F. A. Jones, also extended a welcome to tli© visitors. Replying for the visitors. Dr. W. Krupp said this was their introduction to New Zealand and he and all the party had been deeply impressed by what they had seen already. He conveyed the best wishes from the Canadian bowling fraternity. They had had some difficulty in getting a team together, not because of any lack of bowlers but because everyone wanted to come. Air. R. Gray, vice-captain of the visitfng team, endorsed the sentiments expressed by Dr. Krupp. The bowling matches this evening consisted of friendly games, the Canadians ancl representatives of the Norih Auckland clubs being mixed together in a series of seven rinks. Tomorrow the party will be conducted by cars to Whangaruru, where a kapa Maori and luncheon will be provided. A Maori entertainment and an exhibition of tree-planting in the kauri bush at Kaimamaku will also be given. On their return to Whangarei a series of seven competitive match* * between the Canadian and North Auckland teams will be played on th* Whangarei greens.
